Notes from The Farmer’s Daughter – Lessons from the moon

Interestingly I have always been drawn to the moon in all its phases.

The Harvest Moon is charming as it comes soon after sunset for several evenings, providing an abundance of bright moonlight early in the evening. It differs from the other moons since it relates to the timing of the autumnal equinox (which was September 22 this year). The Harvest Moon was traditionally used to aid farmers harvesting their summer-grown crops and can occur in either “September or October depending on how the lunar cycle lines up with the Gregorian calendar.

This Fall, I witnessed the beauty of the Harvest Moon from my office window. Feeling compelled to run outside with my camera, as I often do, I captured some pleasing photos.

More importantly, I was able to stand in nature listening to the sounds that surround me, taking in the vastness of the night sky, standing in awe of that moment in time.

Though gardeners and farmers often use the moon to guide them with their planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting, I think the moon can also serve another purpose, a reminder of sorts.

Check out my moon-inspired poem below.

Harvest Moon 2021 Rideau Lakes, ON

The moon, a face in the crowd

Missed
Unnoticed
Never looking up!

Time flutters
Year’s pass
Never looking up!

Screens and sounds
No silence
Never looking up!

Texts
Tweets and posts
Never looking up!

Running not walking
Always rushing
Never looking up!

No empathy
No kindness
Never looking up!

Blame, hate, outrage
Worse
Never looking up!

Stranger’s pass
Neighbours’ near
Never looking up!

Take time
Listen, smile
Look up!
